Dr. Barry Liesch

I teach music at Biola University (La Mirada, CA), write books, offer seminars on worship and keyboard improvisation, and compose/arrange music. A CD for solo sax, clarinet, rhythm band, and orchestra is my current project. Performance-wise, I'm basically a keyboard player (piano, synthesizer). I want to make an impact through using various technologies: PowerPoint, video, CD Roms, Internet, MIDI. Canadian, originally from Vancouver, B.C.

Education

Attended fairly conservative music schools early in my education, and ended up doing a Ph.D. in music at a radical, avant guarde school.

Listening interests

I'm listening to a lot of sax players these days--all the way from Kenny G, to Getz, Sanborn, Brecker, as well as clarinetist Eddy Daniels. I love Dave Grusin's work and the string orchestrations of Johnny Mandel.

Christian orientation and Activities

I'm an evangelical Christian, theologically conservative, who is open to all kinds of technologies. Involved in the music of a local church, two small-group Bible studies, and occasionally teach Sunday school.

Mission

To provide materials for equipping Christians for service in worship. To teach, research, write a lot more music, and discover ways to provide resources that build up the church.
