Liturgical Service
First Congregational Church of Los Angeles
540 S. Commonwealth St.
Los Angeles, CA 90020
(213) 385-1341
Seats 1500 (about 200 attend regularly)
Be prepared to be formally greeted at the door by two elderly gentlemen in tails! This is a liberal, high church, mainline protestant congregation of mainly senior citizens. The architecture is magnificent, including the stained glass windows. The acoustics are great. The church houses a most impressive pipe organ with pipes at the front, back, and side: organ concerts are offered some Sunday afternoons. This church had 4,000 members in its heyday, but now about 200 people attend--1/3 of them are in the choir (which sings anthems well). A well-designed service. Church tour available.

Mr. Paul Salamunovich, now retired, directed the choir at this church for many years. During his tenure, he was the most renowned choir director in the Los Angeles area. A good choral tradition probably continues today.
